Frequently Asked Questions
Therapy FAQs
Why might I need therapy?
Everyone needs help now and then. It may be just a feeling that life is getting overwhelming or it may be something (or many things) have happened that spur you to reach out. In our work together, I’ll help you explore your strengths and how to use your strengths to overcome challenges you are facing and reduce the impacts of your problems on your health and wellness. My approach blends research-supported methods with flexible, individualized and person-centered care.
Why talk to a therapist instead of a close friend or family member?
Social and family connections can be valuable supporters. Adding a mental/behavioral health professional to your support team can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, counseling is confidential and a therapist brings a fresh and unbiased perspective. Lastly, if you spend a lot of time confiding in a friend or family member about a situation that evokes a lot of negative emotion, there is the risk that once you are feeling better you could start avoiding that person so you aren’t reminded of this difficult time in your life.
How do I choose a therapist?
Success in therapy has a lot to do with finding a therapist who is a good fit for what you want to work on and for your personal style. For that reason, I recommend a consultation call or visit before the first session so we can discuss your situation and goals for therapy. We’ll make sure I understand what you are looking for, and review the different approaches I might offer as part of a treatment. I am happy to answer any questions about therapy in general, as well as my practices and approach. If it seems like we would be a good fit, we will schedule our first visit and get started. I do not charge for the initial consult call/visit.
What typically happens during a first visit?
Each person has different experiences and reasons for seeking counseling. In order to tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs we will start with a holistic assessment talking about many relevant areas of your life and an exploration of what your goals for therapy might include. We will also take some time to answer any questions you have, review practice policies and logistics, and explore how we will work together on your goals. I know it’s hard to reach out for help - I’m here to make it easier for you.
What patients do you typically see?
I primarily work with adults and adolescents experiencing changes in or challenges with moods, behaviors, substance use, and the aftermath of difficult or traumatic events. Most often this work is done in individual sessions, working with you one-on-one. There are times when it is helpful to include family members, significant others, or close friends and we may decide to invite them to participate in certain sessions to work on a particular issue.
If your main therapy goals are to focus on couples or family therapy or your main concerns are outside my area of expertise I would be happy to share information to get you connected with the appropriate specialist.
Rates & Policy FAQs
What are your fees?
Individual and Family Therapy: $185/session (approx. 50 min.)
How do you accept payment?
Payment can be made by check or through secure online payment.
Do you accept insurance?
I will provide you with billing statements with the details necessary for you to seek reimbursement from your insurance company directly, but I do not process claims with insurance companies. Most plans provide coverage for out-of-network providers. Reimbursement rates vary by plan. If you are planning to submit for reimbursement to your insurance company, some questions to ask your insurance company include:
Can I go out of network for mental health services?
Do I need pre-authorization?
Is there a session limit?
What is the coverage per therapy session and does the coverage vary depending on the type of service I receive (e.g, individual therapy hour, family therapy hour, group therapy, career counseling)?
Do I have a deductible?
How often should I submit claims?
What type of information do I need to provide to be reimbursed?
What is your cancellation policy?
I understand that things come up. If you need to reschedule your appointment, please let me know as soon as possible via phone, text or email. I will make every effort to accommodate requests to reschedule as soon as possible, but we cannot guarantee rescheduled appointments within the same week. If you do not show up for your scheduled therapy appointment and you have not notified me at least 24 hours in advance, you will be charged a cancellation fee of $95.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes. Federal and State laws protect the privacy of all communications between a client and a psychotherapist/therapist. In many situations, the provider can only release information about your treatment to others if you sign a written authorization form. The few exceptions, like certain emergencies where there is an imminent risk of serious harm to someone, will be reviewed before we start our work together.
Our work would fall under the laws of HIPAA. For more information on HIPAA protections visit the HHS.gov website and watch this video on what HIPAA means for you.
I also use a secure telehealth platform for virtual visits.
